2. How Does Dekeral® Ointment Work: Dekeral® Ointment contains urea, which has keratolytic (softening) and anti-itching effects. The second active substance is salicylic acid, which increases the penetration of other substances, thereby increasing the effectiveness of urea. It also has keratoplastic (promotes the skin’s epithelia to grow) and mildly antimicrobial effects. The ointment is intended to soften the skin and remove the scaly and calloused layer of skin off the hands and feet. It is also suitable for skin prone to psoriasis, tinea hyperkeratotic pedum (feet fungus with cracked heels), ichthyoses (a skin disease with a callous disorder, when the skin resembles fish scales) and seborrheic eczema (a skin disease associated with the formation of yellowish ointment scales, most often on the face and in hair). The ointment comes off with water.
How Does Salicylic Acid Work?
It has anti-inflammatory, anti-itch, anti-hidrotic and anti-seborrheic effects. It also has a disinfectant effect, attributed to the competitive suppression of pantothenic acid necessary for microbial growth and multiplication. Up to 2% concentration, it has a keratoplasty effect and it has a keratolytic effect in concentrations higher than 2%. Salicylic acid increases the penetration and effectiveness of other local substances, especially when they are insoluble in water.

How Does Urea Work?
Urea is a physiological part of the skin and sweat. The content of urea in the skin (norm 1.0 -1.4g/100g dry matter) is significantly reduced in atopic eczema, psoriasis and old age. This results in a reduced ability of keratin to bind with water. Urea is a natural moisturizing factor of the keratin layer of the epidermis. It has a hygroscopic (water binding) effect and influences the binding of water to intracellular proteins. It promotes desquamation. It softens the skin and keeps the skin layer smooth. If the concentration is over 10%, urea has an anti-bacterial effect. As a physiological substance, it does not have any undesired side effects and can be applied on small children.
