Characteristics:
The Ichtamol shampoo is used for washing the scalp prone to scaling. Apart from common dandruff, scaling is present also in skin prone to psoriasis, atopic eczema or seborrheic eczema. The shampoo contains ichthammol and an antimicrobial component – hexamidine. When using the skin does not dry up as it does not contain sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) nor sodium laureth sulfate (SLES). Its local application helps to regulate seborrhoea and control the microbial population. The preparation can be used by pregnant and breast-feeding women and children of all age categories. It can be used since the neonatal age.
The preparation has a characteristic colour and odour, which is not a hindrance.
How does Ichthammol work?
Ichthammol and zinc oxide are some of the frequently used local dermatological remedies for children (because of their safety during a long-term application). Ichthamolum (Ichthammol) is a mixture of substances obtained from sulfonation of bituminous oils, traditionally obtained in distillation of fossil shales. It has anti-itching, anti-inflammatory, keroplastic, antiseborrheic and slightly antiseptic effects. It is very little irritant, it has a very low sensitizing potential, it does not increase the skin sensitivity to sunlight, but it has a very characteristic odour and brown-black colour.
Ichthammol is used to treat subacute eczema (mainly atopic), seborrheic and perioral dermatitis, acute psoriasis eruption, lichen ruber planus, pityriasis rosea and acne vulgaris. Ichthammol has a favourable effect similar to pix lithantracis (coal tar) but it lacks its adverse effects (toxic impact on the liver and kidneys, local cancerogenity in long-time use in higher concentrations).

How does Hexamidine work?
Hexamidine is soluble in water and insoluble in organic solvents. It is used as a conservation agent, it also helps to clean the skin and helps against odour inhibiting the growth of microorganisms such as bacteria, fungi or yeast cells or damaging them.
